I. @STP
A. At a specific pressure and temperature one mole of any gas will occupy the same area
1. At STP= 0° C and 101.3 KPa
2. The molar volume at STP is 22.4 L
Examples
1. How many litres will 3.6 mol of H2(g) occupy at STP?
3.6 mol x (22.4L / 1 mol) = 80.64 L --> Sig figs = 81 L
2. A certain gas is found to occupy 12.3 L at STP. How many moles of gas are there?
12.3 L x (1 mol/ 22.4 L) = 276 mol
3. At STP an unknown gas is found to occupy 222 mL. How many moles of gas are there?
0.222 L x (1 mol/ 22.4)= 0.00991 mol
4. A certain amount of chlorine occupies 2.3 L. Find (a) how many moles are present and then(b) determine the mass of chlorine.
(a) 2.3 L x ( 1 mol / 22.4) = 0.10 mol
(b) 0.10 mol x [2(35.5*) g / 1 mol] = 7.1 g/mol
-->chlorine is diatomic = Cl2 = 2(35.5)*
